Congratulations! You’re going to be a grandparent! Seeing your children have children of their own is one of the most spiritual moments in a lifetime. But what exactly can you expect from the experience? As subjective as any family relationship is, these ten things are possibilities faced by pretty much any grandparent-to-be.

  • You’ll be surprised

Grandchildren have a habit of arriving just when you least expect them. Life is complicated, and just because none of your children are actively seeking a pregnancy, there’s no guarantee a little bundle of joy won’t unexpectedly burst into your life.

  • You could raise the child

You never know what the future has in store. If unforeseen circumstances come about, you could end up being the primary caregiver for your grandchild.

  • Be prepared to answer questions

“What are you doing?” “Reading.” “Why?” “Because I like it.” “Why?” This is a typical exchange with a grandchild once they can talk. Get ready to practice extreme patience. They’ll look to you as a source of wisdom.

  • Becoming a grandparent can happen late

Never write off the possibility of becoming a grandparent. Sometimes, its just when you’ve accepted it won’t ever happen that you receive the good news.

  • Strain is possible

In a perfect world, families would be completely harmonious. In the real world, tension within families can harm your relationship with a grandchild. Be ready to fortify yourself against the pain this could cause.

  • The joys surpass expectation

Whatever trials of tribulations are present, there are bound to be moments of incredible joy with your grandchildren. These will be even more special than you can imagine.

  • You’ll spoil your grandchildren

No matter how much you want to avoid it, you are bound to spoil the little love-bugs. The urge to spoil grandchildren must be hardwired into our DNA.

  • You’ll learn about yourself

The sudden creation of a new type of relationship in your life can lead to some significant self-discoveries.

  • You might be far away

All grandparents would love to live near their grandchildren, but some do not get that opportunity. Luckily, modern technology allows you to stay close, even from afar.

  • You’ll feel a constant thrill

Being a grandparent is something you’ve never done before. The intimacy and tenderness you feel for your grandchildren will give you a thrill that will last for the rest of your life.
