Korean Fried Chicken: The Ultimate Birthday Treat to Share with Your Grandchildren

Korean Fried Chicken, also known as KFC, is a savory, crispy, and finger-licking dish that is taking the culinary world by storm. This scrumptious delicacy is not only perfect for introducing your grandchildren to new flavors but also serves as the ultimate birthday treat that is sure to make their special day memorable. Let’s dive into the world of Korean Fried Chicken and explore the secrets behind its mouthwatering taste, as well as how you can prepare this delectable dish to surprise your beloved grandchildren on their special day.

Originating from South Korea, Korean Fried Chicken is a delightful fusion of Korean and American culinary traditions. Unlike the classic American fried chicken, the Korean version boasts a thin and exceptionally crunchy exterior, thanks to its unique double-frying technique. It is typically served with a sweet and spicy sauce, which adds a flavorful punch that will have your grandchildren craving for more.

One of the main aspects that sets Korean Fried Chicken apart from its American counterpart is the use of a double-frying technique. The chicken is first fried at a lower temperature to cook it through, then it is fried again at a higher temperature to achieve that irresistible golden-brown crust. This process not only ensures that the chicken remains juicy on the inside but also creates an incredibly crispy and light exterior that is virtually grease-free.

Another distinctive feature of Korean Fried Chicken is the use of a thin batter. Unlike the thick and heavy coating used in American fried chicken recipes, the Korean version uses a lighter, tempura-like batter made from a mixture of all-purpose flour, cornstarch, and water. This results in a crispy, airy, and delicate crust that allows the natural flavors of the chicken to shine through.

Now that we have covered the unique features of Korean Fried Chicken let’s discuss how you can make this delicious dish at home to surprise your grandchildren on their birthday. To start, gather the following ingredients for a serving of four:

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs chicken wings or drumettes (or any preferred chicken parts)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup cold water or club soda
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For the sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons Korean gochujang (red pepper paste)
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar

Garnish:

  • Sesame seeds
  • Thinly sliced green onions

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the chicken: Clean and pat dry the chicken pieces. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the batter: In a large bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. Slowly add the cold water or club soda, whisking constantly to create a smooth, thick batter.
  3. Coat the chicken: Dip each chicken piece into the batter, ensuring an even coating. Allow excess batter to drip off.
  4. Heat the oil: In a deep fryer or large, heavy-bottomed pot, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Make sure to have enough oil to cover the chicken pieces.
  5. Fry the chicken: Carefully lower the battered chicken pieces into the hot oil. Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding the pot. Cook for 10-12 minutes, or until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through. Use a slotted spoon or tongs to remove the chicken from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  6. Double-fry for crispiness: After all chicken pieces have been fried once, raise the oil temperature to 375°F (190°C). Fry the chicken pieces again for 2-3 minutes, until the crust is extra crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  7. Prepare the sauce: In a small saucepan, combine the gochujang, honey, soy sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, minced garlic, sesame oil, grated ginger, and rice vinegar. Heat the sauce over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.
  8. Coat the chicken: In a large bowl, toss the double-fried chicken pieces with the sauce until evenly coated.
  9. Serve: Plate the sauced chicken, and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Enjoy your homemade Korean Fried Chicken with a side of rice or pickled radish, and don’t forget some cold beverages!

Note: Be cautious when working with hot oil, and always monitor the temperature to avoid overheating or fires.
